These suspended particles flow through plumbing systems without adhering to surfaces, eliminating scale This is the "special" No-Salt needed media installed in Pelican ( and a few other brands ) of Anti-Scale water treatement system.
Quantity normal amount used ( as replacement ) is based on the tank size.

Service Life of this media varies greatly based on the water quality being treated,
and the amount of water being used.
As little was 3 years reported,
but in most applications,
the media lasts for many more years ( 5 - 10 average ).
And when used on chlorinated "city" water,
it is important to remove the chlorine ahead of this tank with some type of whole house Carbon Filter Cartridge
( or a large tank filled with Activated Carbon ).
