Sediment filter ahead of the softener - When, Why, and Which one.
Last Updated: 06/27/2014
QUESTION:
I just ordered a Galaxy 5600M system from you today. I was wondering if I should install a sediment filter ahead of the softener?
*
If you are on a private well and pump, that might be a good idea.
Not always "necessary" but wells tend to have "sediments" in the water, best "trapped" by a sediment filter before water softener.
If on "city" water, it should not be necessary.

Common size / type ( available locally and online ) would be,
This housing,
Housing for Pre-Filter with 3/4" Inlet and Outlet threads

And a 5 or 30 micron filter cartrigde,
see:
and
30 micron pleated filter

If you have a lot of sediments, you can get a longer version of the 2 1/2 filters ( 20 inches ),
or Wider Housing / filters ( 4 1/2 inch, aka "Big Blue" or "Heavy Duty" ) in 10" or 20" lengths.

Filters, Housing, and RO filters
