Hard Water - By Passing Resin in Tank Some How?

Problem of Hard Water even though Valve appears to be working, as several possible "reasons".
This problem is most common with Autotrol valves ( using old by pass valves ),
but the problem can occur with any Valve Brand ( due not enough resin in the tank or because of an "external" by pass occurring, see more below ).
** If the Autotrol softener valve is truly operating correctly and you truly have NO Soft Water, then it would mean the water is NOT going through your RESIN.
By pass points are:
* # 4 valve disc, by pass valve is not closing ( rarely the problem )
* Distributor o-ring is bad or missing ( rarely the problem )
* By Pass Valve attached to unit ( can be the problem as internal orings can come of the shaft and allow some water to flow directly to the house )
* External By Pass valve in your house plumbing that is OPEN and should be CLOSED ( most common thing I've found in these situations ).

* Not enough Resin in the Tank ( must have at least 20 inches of Resin in the tank, with 24 - 26 inches typical level inside the Resin Tank ).
******************
The old style Autotrol By Pass Valves use a "push in"
method of redirecting the flow.
If you push the knob ( 46F ) IN on the RIGHT ( standing in front of the system ), this will place the valve in "by pass"
and cause the knob ( another 46F ) on the left to come out about an inch.
To "restore" flow through the Control Valve and resin tank, you would Push the knob on the Left back IN. PUSHING the knob can require extreme
force. A hard "push" with your fist, or a "tap" with a hammer, may be required.
Sometimes engaging the By Pass fails to cut off the valve flow to the Control Valve 100%, because the internal oring in the center of the by pass shaft is not
sealing 100%. This common failure is the main reason Autotrol now uses a different design ( double shut off - redirecting valves ) for the "new" style By Pass
for their Control Valves.
The part labeled 61F does not "do anything". And I've never seen this used for anything.
NOTE: This BY PASS Style is not longer made, and the internal repair parts are obsolete.
Only the Adapters ( 54F,55F,56F ) are still available and are sold in KITS ( pair of each of the 3 items )
The replacement By Pass is called the 256 and will fit both 155 and 255 valve bodies, but not 163, or 168.
